How Brush Components Make a Brush

Ever wonder how an artisan turns a pile of brush components into a paintbrush?

It’s not a complicated process, though it does take a set of skills that only come with practice. Choosing the right brush components – bristles, a wood or plastic paint brush handle, a ferrule and some epoxy – can make or break any attempt to make a great brush. The components are nearly as important as the fabrication process.

Here’s a quick rundown of the brush components you’ll need to make your own paintbrush.

Bristles. Bristles are possibly the most important brush components you’ll need; they’re not only the primary contact point for the surface you’re painting, gluing or priming, they also serve as a vessel for whatever medium you’re using. When shopping for brush components, be sure to spend a little extra time to determine what kinds of bristles you’ll need.

A plastic or wood paint brush handle. The handle is nearly as important on your list of brush components as the bristles, particularly if you’re making a brush that’ll see a lot of use. You want a handle that’ll be comfortable in your hand over long periods of time, but that’s strong and sturdy enough to maintain the weight of the bristles and the medium. Looks aren’t as important – a brush that’s used a lot is a brush that gets plenty of paint (or glue, or primer, or whatever your medium of choice is) on it. Consider a dirty paint brush handle a mark of pride.

Ferrule. The ferrule is the brush component that holds the bristles onto the paint brush handle. From the latin for “small bracelet,” the ferrule’s task is to clamp the bristles into the handle after being clamped in by the brushmaker.

Epoxy. The final ingredient in brushmaking, epoxy is the key to keeping the whole brush – components and all – together. A bit of epoxy dabbed onto the ferrule, between the bristles and the handle, creates the nexus of all brush components.
